Working with the CANDLE study: Manuscripts and Grants

Manuscript Analysis Plan Proposal (MAPP): All investigators planning publications utilizing existing CANDLE data must submit a MAPP and a MAPP cover form. Please read through the MAPP guidelines prior to beginning an application. All MAPP cover forms and proposals should be submitted electronically using the link below.  Please contact our Emerging Science Coordinator at 901-448-2732 or candlestudy@uthsc.edu if you have questions.

Grant Application Proposal (GAP): CANDLE leadership will consider allowing individuals who have worked with the CANDLE data to submit grant applications for research funding. Please see the links below for more information on proposals to use the CANDLE study and/or its data in grant applications or for new data collection (e.g. ancillary studies). If you are interested in a submitting a grant to work with CANDLE data, please submit a GAP cover form with a Letter of Intent (more information in the GAP Guidelines below) using the electronic submission link below.

Biospecimens: CANDLE has a wealth of maternal and child biospecimens collected throughout the duration of the study. Please note that, at this point in time, the CANDLE biorepository is under inventory and reorganization. Thus, proposals to use the biospecimens for new assays are not being accepted until the new utilization infrastructure is complete and in place. Please check with the Emerging Science Coordinator or the Principal Investigator for updates on the status of the biorepository.

Exit Consultation: Upon expiration or completion of an approved Analysis Plan, any investigator that has had access to CANDLE data must complete the CANDLE Exit Consultation Form. This form cannot be submitted electronically; a hard copy of the signed document must be submitted to the Emerging Science Coordinator.

Important Information:

Priority Research Areas:
The Publication and Presentation (P&P) Committee will give preference to manuscript and grant proposals that address priority research areas. CANDLE is primarily interested in research that focuses on predictors of socioemotional and neurocognitive skills in early life (0-5 years of age). Predictors of interest include but are not limited to: prenatal exposures, maternal psychosocial stress and sources of support, and the child’s post-natal environment. Of particular interest are predictors of socioemotional or neurocognitive outcomes that are amenable to intervention and can be targets for community-based programs that support the development of young children.

Data Analysis: At present, all CANDLE data analysis is completed by the CANDLE analytic team (see MAPP and GAP guidelines for more details). Due to limited staffing, timelines for the completion of approved analyses are highly variable and must be discussed with the PI. We are developing a data sharing plan which we hope will facilitate productivity and will update this website as information becomes available. Please note that projects that address UCI priority research areas will be given priority.

Pilot Studies
In most circumstances, CANDLE is not an appropriate cohort for the purpose of “pilot studies” that collect new data. Any investigator wishing to add new measures to the CANDLE battery for the purpose of a pilot study must have an existing relationship with CANDLE and meet the criteria outlined for “Ancillary Studies” below.

Ancillary Studies
An ancillary study is a study that requires access to CANDLE participants, whether based on specific recruitment criteria or the cohort as a whole, to collect measurements or data directly from CANDLE participants using procedures or instruments that are not included in the already funded core protocol. Although such proposals may involve the entire cohort or a specific subpopulation within the cohort, priority will be given to proposals attempting to utilize the value of the full cohort.

  1. Ancillary studies must contribute financial or personnel resources to cover the costs of the collection of new information from CANDLE participants. Investigators may either propose to submit a grant to obtain these funds or investigators may already have funds to conduct the proposed work (e.g. from their University Start-Up package). In either case, investigators will need to complete a Grant Application Proposal (GAP) process (beginning with a Letter of Intent and GAP Cover Form, followed up with a full GAP) and indicate whether the funds are being sought or are already available.   2. An IRB must be submitted to The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
